AP Spanish Language and Culture

THE COURSE

The AP Spanish Language and Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness.

The AP Spanish Language and Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in Spanish.

The AP Spanish Language and Culture course engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of cultural products (e.g., tools, books, music , laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions).

WHAT ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS OF THE AP SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE EXAM?

The exam features the following key elements:

  • The exam focuses on assessing student performance in the three modes of communication: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational.

  • It includes a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. Each of these two sections contributes 50% of the total score for the exam.

  • There are 65 multiple-choice questions, divided into 9 sets. The multiple-choice questions assess student performance in Written and Print Interpretive Communication and Audio and Visual Interpretive Communication.

  • There are four free-response tasks. These four communicative tasks are designed to assess student performance in Interpersonal Writing and Speaking and Presentational Writing and Speaking.

  • Exam source materials and tasks are contextualized; all exam sources and tasks are connected to one of the six required course themes, and students are provided contexts though advance organizers.

  • Time is provided for students to read advance organizers and preview exam questions before they begin a task.

  • Authentic materials are used as source materials; these materials reflect the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.

  • Audio sources are played twice, with the exception of the audio used in the conversation in Free Response Question 3.
